Art Active, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was created in 2014 in Los Angeles, California. Its co-founders, Christopher Burton and Robin Strayhorn, fused their shared love for the arts and mindfulness to create a refreshing new approach to arts education for youth. With mindfulness at its core, Art Active, Inc. provides youth ages 6-24 in under-served communities the opportunity to learn various forms of artistry while being trained by professional artists. Art Active believes that art is an integral part of all communities and should be freely experienced, shared and admired by all. With that belief, all students participate in a free 6-8 week course/module that will encourage proficiency in an art form and will culminate in a shared experience for the communities that our students represent. This can present itself as a public art installation, a performance or a multimedia interactive. The exposure that students receive to these art fields will illuminate possibilities in art related careers that can further benefit their communities at large.
Mindfulness is affixed to all modules as a means to stimulate creative fluidity but also supports the overall growth of each student. By developing a dedicated mindfulness practice students are able to relieve stress and improve sleep, focus and concentration all while enhancing emotional intelligence. Targeted communities are often devoid of such a tool that can alter their response to stressful situations, new experiences and personal expression. Art Active, Inc. mindfulness professionals mentor students to assist them in developing their own personal daily mindfulness practice. As students become more “purposely aware” they’ll be able to more fully experience each moment and convey those subsequent emotions through art.
